Ke$ha Calls Bob Dylan Cover 'An Emotional Purging'

Pop singer sings 'Don't Think Twice, It's All Right' for Amnesty International anniversary album.
By Jocelyn Vena

<P>It's hard to associate <a href="/music/artist/_kesha_/artist.jhtml">Ke$ha</a> with songs about anything other than hot guys, body glitter and partying. But she's defying her usual topics of interest for human rights organization Amnesty International. The singer is one of the many musicians on the org's <i>Chimes of Freedom</i> compilation of Bob Dylan's music, out January 24. </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="Ke$ha Calls Bob Dylan Cover Choice 'An Accident'" id="vid:720838" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>When MTV News spoke with K-Dollar Sign last week about her <a href="/news/articles/1676172/kesha-sleazy-remix.jhtml">all-star remix of "Sleazy,"</a> she also opened up about switching gears vocally and emotionally for her version of Dylan's classic "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right." </P><P> </P><P>"I mean, I think it's pretty well known that he's one of, if not my most, favorite artists of all time and ... one of the most amazing lyricists as well &#8212; the original storyteller," she explained. "So I love Bob Dylan and this was just, like, a dream. When they asked me to do a cover, I was just, like, salivating and going through all my records. It was so fun. It was the best homework assignment you could possibly have." </P><P> </P><P>K's version of Dylan's song is a slow-burning, heartbreaking ode to the already heartbreaking classic, where she channels Dylan through lyrics like "Still I wish there was somethin' you would do or say/ To try and make me change my mind and stay/ We never did too much talkin' anyway/ So don't think twice, it's all right." </P><P> </P><P></p><div class="player-placeholder right" title="What Is The Biggest Perk Of Being A Headliner?" id="vid:642810" width="240" height="211"></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>Ke$ha had originally intended to record another Dylan track, but when she heard that someone else had their sights set on it, she settled on "Don't Think Twice," prompting a catharsis she could never have imagined. </P><P> </P><P>"This song was kind of an accident. I sat down and this is the first take that I ever sang," she recalled. "I just sat down on my bed for the first time after months of being on tour and I just started crying, and it was kind of like an emotional purging, and you can hear it on the record." </P><P> </P><P>In addition to Ke$ha and her contribution, the album will feature 75 other Dylan classics recorded by nearly 80 artists including Adele, Miley Cyrus, "Glee" star Darren Criss, My Chemical Romance, Evan Rachel Wood and Sugarland. The album pays tribute to the 50th anniversary of Amnesty International.</p>

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

<P>Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off <MTVNLINK type="url" id="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/led_zeppelin/artist.jhtml">Led Zeppelin</MTVNLINK>'s 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again." </P><P> </P><P>That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on <a href="/news/articles/1610708/adam-allison-shine-on-idol-rock-night.jhtml">"American Idol" rock night</a> Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on <I>Rolling Stone</i> magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004. </P><P> </P><P></p><div style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;"> </P><P><embed src="http://media.mtvnservices.com/mgid:uma:video:mtvmusic.com:84215" width="256" height="223" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" flashVars="dist=http://www.mtvmusic.com" allowFullScreen="true" AllowScriptAccess="always"></embed></div><p> </P><P> </P><P>The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album <I>Led Zeppelin II.</i> Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon. </P><P> </P><P>For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997. </P><P> </P><P>Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction. </P><P> </P><P><b>Get your "Idol" fix on MTV News' <a href="/news/articles/1486475/mtv-news-american-idol.jhtml">"American Idol" page</a>, where you'll find all the latest news, interviews and opinions.</b></p>

Former Yankees Pitcher Jim Bouton Plays Not My Job

Bouton's classic baseball memoir Ball Four, first published in 1970, is just out as an e-book. Bouton famously wrote about shenanigans in baseball, but compared to other sports, baseball players are hardly immoral at all. We're going to ask him about people who really know how to cheat.

The Social Media Shuffle: From Kony To Spooning

Remember Joseph Kony? A video about the African warlord dominated social media early last month. But its call to action on Friday night is largely being ignored by many of the same young people who were initially drawn to the cause. Some are focused on new and much less serious things.

Retro Fool's Day 3 at Stevens Pass: Old School, The Great Equalizer

“Welcome to the best contest in the history of the world,” says Maxx Von Marbod, addressing a crowd of neon-clad warriors in front of the Stevens Pass Winter Resort day lodge. Behind him, a decrepit, six-foot-tall and under-vert stunt ditch is beginning to melt. Even though it’s only 10:30 am, temperatures are creeping into the 50s under a blazing sun. Perfect. Welcome to Retro Fools Day 3, what I might call the best contest in the history of this spring.

As the crew in Sun Valley, ID put it recently, old’s cool. Even the young bucks are down to bust out the jester hat and blunt-tailed artifacts of snowboarding past and rip gates these days. So 100-or-so competitors (and I use that term loosely) make their way to the top of a sketchy-by-design race course and rip a Chinese downhill, before lining up for their two burns through the course. The stylings and demographics run the gamut—from 60-year-old telemarkers to 30-somethings reliving the glory days on their old Brushie to Russell Winfield riding his very own Fat Albert pro model, snowskaters, and even a pre-teen contingent, there is room on course for all.

When the slush turns slushier, the stunt ditch proves a highlight—Stevens Pass legends like Brian Schaefer and Monty Hayes seem right at home ripping snake lines through entry hips and chunder blocks, while Jesse Burtner and Von Marbod heckle from a shady spot adjacent the Bull’s Tooth patio. And everybody rides for hours, hiking a sketchy little ditch that might be best categorized as a 1/3-pipe until a snake run of 30-or-so riders shuts it down for the day. It is strangely reminiscent of the early 90s scene—not just in dress, but the vibe. Nobody’s fronting, vibing, or putting on their contest face. The dude chuking backies is treated the same as the dude laying down hardboot carves, the same as the kid dropping in for her first ever cruise through some semblance of transition.

As the sun dips low in the sky and we move the party to the RV lot for après and a barbeque, it occurs to me: perhaps old school is the great equalizer. At Retro Fools Day 3, this certainly seems to be the case.

A huge thanks to Maxx Von Marbod, Dave Billinghurst, Nate Escalona, Jules and the rest of the crew at Stevens Pass. Long live the old school.

iPhone remains a best-seller, despite carriers

Carriers have a love/hate relationship with the iPhone. They hate Apple's control (because they want that control for themselves) but love the money and customer-retention having the iPhone on their network brings them. Sprint's willingness to pay damn near all the money in their pockets, and delve into whatever passes for a corporate second mortgage, proves that that point. AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint sell Android because they want to. They sell iPhone because they have to.

Will and Kate Celebrate Their Royal One Year Anniversary!

Now that Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are preparing to walk down the aisle, Americans are looking forward to one of the biggest weddings of the century; but before the hype of one of Hollywood's favorite couples came the royal wedding of Prince William of Wales and Kate Middleton.

Exactly one year ago today (April 29), excited viewers around the world gathered near their televisions to watch history in the making as Catherine Elizabeth Middleton married William Arthur Philip Louis Mountbatten-Windsor at the exquisite Westminster Abbey.

Since the moment the royal couple said "I do," the world has been intrigued by watching their every move, including the life of Kate's younger sister, Pippa Middleton. After helping to walk her sister down the aisle, Pippa became a household name as millions envied her in that gorgeous white bridesmaid dress by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen.

Meanwhile, Will and Kate have taken the world by storm, stepping out on two official tours, where the excitement of meeting the couple was counteracted by the same amount of excitement for women everywhere waiting to see what new fashions the Princess would be wearing that day.

Though rumors have sparked multiple times that a royal baby is on the way, so far the only new addition to the family is a puppy! A black Cocker Spaniel named Lupo, or "wolf" in Italian, has been the center of the two's attention.

Besides the wedding and undeniable modern-day freshness William and Kate bring to the world, they have also made headlines for getting their own wax figures unveiled in London and New York by Madame Tussauds, as well as meeting the Obamas and other Hollywood A-listers.

Though we don't know what's ahead for the next year of marriage, we can only assume it will include more head-turning glamorous fashions and commendable charity efforts.

Biden Foreign-Policy Counterattack On Romney Highlights GOP Challenge

A president seeking re-election against a backdrop of a lackluster economy would be remiss if he didn't stress his unique roles as the nation's top policymaker for international relations and the military's commander-in-chief. President Obama and his campaign clearly intend to exploit those credentials for all they're worth while pointing out Mitt Romney's lack of them.

2012 Jerez Moto3 FP3 Result: Oliviera Pulls A Big Lead In The Rain

With the weather a little more settled in Jerez on Saturday morning - it rained for most of the night, and the track is now fully wet - practice returned to some semblance of normality. Miguel Oliveira's dominance of Moto3 in the wet continued, topping the FP3 session by over a second with a fast flying lap at the very end. The Portuguese rider deposed former Red Bull Rookie Arthur Sissis from top spot, the young Australian being demoted to 2nd, just ahead of Danny Kent, though Kent could have gone faster if he hadn't got engaged in an altercation with RW Racing's Luis Salom. After yesterday's problems in the rain, Romano Fenati found his feet again, and ended the session in 5th.
