Editorial: Ouya's success is opportunity missed for Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony
While today's videogames are bigger, flashier and more impressive than ever, it's hard not to think that the golden era of console gaming is behind us. Back in the late '80s and early-to-mid '90s, when a new console came out every couple of years to cut its predecessors off at the knees and brutally savage the bank accounts of the hardcore gamer who had to have them all, there was genuine excitement. Now, with modern consoles showing their age and throwing on more and more gimmicks like so much makeup to compensate, it's hard to really get properly enthused about any of them.
Out of nowhere came Ouya and, based on the $2.6 million it raised in 24 hours alone, it's safe to say it has succeeded in renewing that excitement. That's a stark contrast to the general feeling of malaise at this year's E3. I'm excited too -- but cautiously so.

GOP Antics vs. Action on Economy
African Americans and Latinos have suffered the most in the Great Recession. They were the first to lose jobs, and the last to find new jobs. They struggle with the highest unemployment, the greatest loss of personal wealth, the highest percentage of families losing their homes. The calamity has led many to call for programs that would target states and communities most in need. Washington has been unresponsive if not downright hostile to this notion, yet Republicans do target when it suits them — particularly with the largely African-American residents of the District of Columbia.

Google Voice Search learns Latin American Spanish, Indonesian, and Malaysian
Google's official blog post offers some interesting insights into the process of collecting and analyzing the speech data needed to expand support. Thousands of hours were spent gathering voice samples and choosing key regional accents to analyze, and International Program Manager Linne Ha is clearly very appreciative of the Google users who helped the company complete the expansion. Without an enthusiastic base of users to lend a hand, Google Voice Search's polyglot powers would have been nearly impossible to deliver.

Samsung brings out Galaxy S III Developer Edition for Verizon, answers the call for an unlockable bootloader
We didn't have too many reservations about the Galaxy S III for Verizon in stock form. Anyone who's been eager to load new firmware, however, has been up in arms over the particularly locked down bootloader that Big Red (but no other US carrier so far) demands. Enter the Galaxy S III Developer Edition. The new, direct-from-Samsung variant will have all the CDMA and LTE a Verizon subscriber could want, but with the option to unlock the bootloader for as much customization as serious Android fans might stand. As you'd anticipate, the catch is simply who takes the hit if something goes wrong: brick the phone and you're likely looking at an expensive phone call to Samsung rather than a trip to the local Verizon store. Regardless, those who like Verizon's network but don't believe its claims about 'dangerous' unlocked phones can get the best of both worlds soon -- as long as they're willing to spend the $600 off-contract once the Developer Edition is ready in the near future. Check after the break for Samsung's official Q&A on the subject.

Motorola announces the RAZR V for Canada
Motorola really loves their RAZR line, thinking back years ago to the old flip phone, and then more recently to the remodeled device that was quickly outdone by the RAZR MAXX. Today Motorola has announced the Motorola RAZR V, which will be destined for Canada. Coming in at only 8.4mm the device is extremely thin, but being covered in DuPont Kevlar fiber it is also remarkably strong as well.
In addition to all the normal goodies we are used to seeing, Motorola has also included something very unique called SMARTACTIONS. These smart actions will make using the device even more of a pleasure, and easier on you as well. Your device will now be able to know when you plug headphones in that you want to launch a specific app or playlist, or change some device settings to help save battery when it is getting a bit low. The application can automate many daily tasks, and make things much easier on you, which is always a huge plus. The device is set to launch in Q3 in Canada, and should be available from many of the large retailers. Hit the break for the full release.

UFC 148 Bonuses: Silva, Griffin, and Ortiz Earn $75,000 Each
It was an interesting night, to say the least, at the MGM Grand Gardens Arena. After a slow start, UFC 148 launched into action at the start of the main card. Although the night was neither free from controversy nor calamity, it still managed to deliver some unforgettable moments. It was the headlining bouts that truly delivered, as evident by the fact that three-quarters the night's stars walked out of the cage with an extra $75K for their performances.

Droid Incredible 4G LTE review: Verizon gets an excellent smaller-sized Android phone
It's hard to underestimate the value of brand loyalty. Just ask Verizon Wireless. It's with satisfied Incredible and Incredible 2 owners in mind that the carrier is promoting the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, a 4-inch, $149 device that -- as you may have guessed -- rides along VZW's fast LTE network.
More Info
Interestingly, the Incredible 4G LTE is landing at a time when many consumers might have preferred, say, the HTC One X. In fact, though, Verizon's decision to instead update the Incredible (also made by HTC) introduces a rather enviable proposition to Verizon customers. Remember that in a short matter of time, the Samsung Galaxy S III will soon make its debut at Verizon, at which point, it's expected to become the network's premiere smartphone. Still, its large size will deter many shoppers, and when viewed through this lens, the Droid Incredible 4G LTE begins to make sense. Put simply, it's a compact handset that stands as the antithesis to the assumption that size equals power. While the handset doesn't quite approach the capabilities or elegance of the One X (or the One S, for that matter), the latest Incredible is a worthy successor and deserves consideration as your next smartphone -- regardless of your current provider. Read on to learn why.

Nokia Lumia 910 pops up in developer tool, has us chasing phantoms
The often rumored Nokia Lumia 910 has proven to be an ephemeral spirit so far. If the company's Remote Developer Access tool is an indicator, though, it may become corporeal before too long. A Nokiapoweruser reader has spotted the phone's name hanging out as one of the selectable devices. Unfortunately, we're not getting much more than that: there's no hardware specifications lurking about that we know of. Earlier rumors had it being a slight spin on the Lumia 900 with a 12-megapixel camera and even a Verizon edition, but the lack of hard evidence outside of the name may leave us all wondering for some time yet as to what Espoo's flagship might get in a refresh. We won't be shocked if any future overhaul waits for Microsoft's latest and greatest platform to arrive.
[Thanks, Nish]

No Child Left Behind Isn't the Problem. We Are
Everyone not chattering about the job numbers is chattering about this morning's New York Times article on No Child Left Behind and the waivers that are increasingly freeing states from its requirements. In general some waivers were necessary "“ and some were issued during the Bush Administration, too "“ because the law was supposed to be reauthorized in 2007 and 2012 is now half over. But when you read stuff like this line in The Times story, you can't help but wonder how much of all this is "everybody knows" and how much is...

Add user-defined constants with PCalc RPN Calculator for iPhone and iPad
PCalc RPN Calculator for iPhone and iPad is one of the original non-Apple calculators to hit the App Store and continues to be one of the leading calculators on the market. It was recently updated to introduce a huge user-requested feature -- the ability to add and edit your own constants. Even more, your custom constants will automatically sync to all your devices running PCalc with iCloud.
To create a constant, tap the button that has 42 (this is the constants button). From here, you'll see a list of categories of popularly used constants in various scientific fields. In the upper left, tap the Edit button. PCalc comes with a category called "User" that you can add to, or you can create your own categories. Once you select a category, tap the plus sign to enter your constant. You can give it a name, value, and unit.
Some of the other new features include the addition of all the functions from the Mac version of PCalc, including complex numbers and financial categories. To access them, just tap the f(x) button. To make room for this new button, you must now tap the C button to access the AC button on the iPhone. You can also show up to eight lines of display, pick a specific memory if multiple memories are enabled, and the currency conversion section is more intuitive.
There are two versions of PCalc RPN Calculator available in the App Store: free and premium. The premium version is $9.99 and includes all the features of the free version that can be purchased as in-app purchases. The available packs in the free version include Conversion, Multiple Line, Power User, Engineer, Theme, and Programmer. These in-app purchases range from $0.99 to $2.99.
The good
- RPN mode optional
- Looks good
- Custom constants that sync between devices with iCloud
- List of commonly used functions
- Up to 8 lines of display
- Paper tape
- Gestures
- Universal for iPhone and iPad
The bad
- You can only access the Edit screen for constants when in the first main screen for constants. Several times I have wanted to tap the category that I want to add a constant to before editing, but you can't, even when in a user-created category. You must go back to the category list, tap edit, then select the category.
The conclusion
PCalc is a great calculator that just keeps getting better. My favorite new feature is the ability to add custom constants as this will be a awesome for students and professionals alike. Although PCalc is technically an RPN calculator, I view it more as a regular scientific calculator that has the option to go RPN. I actually wish the "RPN" would be removed from the name, because when I first read it was an RPN calculator, I was turned off because I hate RPN calculators. It turns out that RPN isn't set as the default and needs to be toggled on if you prefer. So if you're like me, don't be scared off by RPN!
