Amazon Cloud Player review: functional, not mind blowing, and still US-only

Amazon Android Cloud Player appIt's hard to believe: our world-spanning network, our Internet, which is the cornerstone of free speech and free society -- which, on a good day, is capable of causing populist revolutions -- is still crippled by banal geolocation restrictions. We are, of course, talking about Amazon's two latest offerings, both of which are only available in the United States. Last week it was the excellent Android Appstore for Android, and today it's the Amazon Cloud Player for Web and Android.

Along with Cloud Player, Amazon also launched Cloud Drive, which is basically just like any other cloud storage digital locker. It's not particularly feature rich, and there's no real reason to use it over something like SugarSync or SkyDrive -- it does work outside the US, however.

Its primary purpose, as far as we're concerned, is that it stores your your Cloud Player music in a subdirectory. You get 5GB of Cloud Drive storage for free, and then it's $1 per gigabyte per year if you need more space.

The Amazon Cloud Player itself will not, to put it bluntly, blow your mind. It works, but it's very much an early, and possibly rushed, release. Let's dive in to the Web and Android players for a closer look.

Kongo scores eye-popping comeback knockout over Barry

PITTSBURGH -- Mark Cheick Kongo down as a candidate for Knockout of the Year, as he survived a barrage of Pat Barry punches to knock out Barry in the first round of their main event bout at the Consol Energy Center for UFC on Versus 4.

The fight started slowly, with both fighters tentatively throwing leg kicks at each other. Then, Barry appeared to be on his way to a win with a right hand that staggered Kongo. Barry jumped on top to try to finish the bout, but Kongo survived and scrambled to stay on his feet. From there, he delivered two punishing rights that sent Barry straight to the canvas. Barry was out cold. The bout was stopped at 2:39 of the first round.

Both fighters had talked about how this bout would show off their more well-rounded games, but it still ended up a battle of two great strikers. Kongo showed off the strength of his chin in surviving Barry's strikes, and that he could stay calm and persevere for the win.

US Army testing haptic belt that nudges soldiers in the right direction

Haptic belts and other wearable devices that can guide you may not exactly be a new idea -- we've even seen some DIY attempts -- but the US Army testing them? Well, that's something worth noting. As New Scientist reports, the Army Research Office in North Carolina is now working on just such a device (likely more advanced than the one pictured here), and hopes that the belts could eventually be used to remotely guide soldiers on the battlefield. That's done with a combination of GPS, an accelerometer and a compass -- and, of course, the haptic part of the equation, which vibrates or pulses to point the soldier in the right direction, or indicate when they're nearing their target. The idea there being to reduce the need for any handheld devices (at least until thought helmets become a reality), which can both take the soldiers' eyes off the battlefield and potentially reveal their position at night. There's still no indication as to when the belts might actually see use in the field, but early tests show that they're at least as accurate as a handheld GPS, and the soldiers say they actually prefer it.

Coldplay Premiere 'Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall' Video

New clip is a brightly-colored, paint-covered celebration of everyday life.
By James Montgomery

Coldplay's Chris Martin in their "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" music video
Photo: Capitol

It's probably impossible to measure how many gallons of paint — glow-in-the-dark, high-gloss, Krylon, etc. — were used in the making of Coldplay's brand-new "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" video, which premiered Wednesday (June 29). But suffice it to say, it was probably a lot.

It seems that paint, gloriously splashed and joyously hued, is a recurring theme in the band's upcoming fifth album; while you can infer from that what you will, in the case of Coldplay's "Waterfall" clip, the end result is one that matches the sheer uplift of the song itself. This is a video that shakes you to life.

Filmed mainly in stop-motion, the video follows Chris Martin and his mates as they wander through, above and, eventually, outside a decaying urban expanse, their music — and, of course, the paint — breathing new life into its crumbling husk. In a way, that's sort of like the song, too. Martin's lyrics are very much about the power his old records possess; they imbue ordinary life with the extraordinary.

Aside from the paint, the clip's use of stop-motion recalls earlier Coldplay videos, most notably "Strawberry Swing," but they've always had a thing for messing with the constraints of time (see the shot-in-reverse "The Scientist" or "Christmas Lights" for proof). Their new one matches the exuberance of "Swing" and the childlike wonder of "Lights," and, unlike "The Scientist," there isn't a single horrifying car wreck to be seen.

But mostly it's about all that paint, those colors and the ability they have to brighten everyday life. Just like Martin sings, every siren can be a symphony and every heartbeat can build a cathedral. With "Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall," Coldplay prove that they're always on message, even when they're making a glorious mess.

Ke$ha, Adam Lambert, Ne-Yo Have A Few Royal Wedding Gift Ideas

From 'guyliner' to American delicacies like Uncrustables, Kathy Griffin, Mike Posner and more tell us what they'd get Will and Kate.
By Terri Schwartz

What kind of wedding gift do you give the royal couple who has everything?

The wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton is on Friday (April 29), so MTV News reached out to some of our favorite Hollywood celebrities — from Ke$ha to Adam Lambert. Fortunately, they had some solid ideas!

"I haven't met them, so it would be kind of awkward," the "Tik Tok" singer admitted to MTV News. "I might paint them something. Maybe I'll paint them a guitar."

Like Ke$ha, other celebs had suggestions that were from the heart, even if they weren't the most practical.

"I will go out on a limb and say these two individuals maybe haven't had Uncrustables before in their life. I would get them a strawberry Uncrustable," Mike Posner said about the pastry.

David Cook followed up on the all-American food idea. "I feel like they have everything except maybe they probably don't have an Applebee's gift card. I'll go [with an] Applebee's gift card," the "American Idol" alum said.

Other stars said they'd gift the British prince and soon-to-be-princess with an item they were personally best known for.

"I'd probably buy William some eyeliner," Lambert said. "He could do that, he could rock that look. I think."

Ne-Yo was more empathetic, saying he would give gifts that could help shield them from photographers and blend in with everyday people. "Three years' supply of sunglasses. Yeah, put them on. A bunch of baseball caps, throw those on, and try to move around like regular people," the singer said. "I can't imagine what it would be like having to live under that big of a magnifying glass your whole life ... and fake mustaches, that's what I'd give them."

Brooke Burke went the more traditional route, saying she would get Will and Kate a journal to record the big event. "I would ask them to really take the time to write down thoughts and phrases and wishes," Burke said. "And not really to lose sight of how they feel about each other now and to really hold on to that feeling."

Kathy Griffin had good intentions but the comedian couldn't resist a puke joke.

"If I had to get the royal couple a gift, I would get them the Royal Couple Vomit Bag, which someone sent me a photo of," Griffin told us. "So you can actually buy vomit bags with their image on it, and I think that that is an honor and I hope that they see it as such."

What would you give to William and Kate? Share your ideas in the comments section!

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V gets reviewed, deemed one of the best super-zooms around

Sony's Cyber-shot DSC-HX100V been available for a little while now, but it's flown somewhat under the radar when it comes to in-depth reviews. Photography Blog's now chimed in with its take on the camera, however, which is not only thorough but effusive in its praise. According to the site, the HX100V is simply one of the best super-zoom cameras they've tested (30X, in this case), with it delivering some excellent still images and best-in-class 1080p video, along with some welcome added touches including an intuitive focus / zoom ring and built-in GPS (although the latter will lead to a 25 percent hit in battery life if you leave it on all the time). Some of the few drawbacks are a lack of a RAW shooting mode, and an LCD that folds out but doesn't rotate, but the site says those are pretty easy to forgive considering everything else you get for the $400 or so asking price. Hit the source link below for the full review.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive
When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features -- Test Drive -- was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don't despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn't work with every app. The IMDb app works fine -- you can even watch movie trailers on it! -- but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There's very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Stanley Cup winners also big MMA fans

The night before UFC 131, Junior dos Santos attended the Stanley Cup Final game five, a thrilling and close game won by the Canucks. Though dos Santos was disappointed that no big fights broke out, he was impressed by the game.

Now, it turns out that the Boston Bruins, the winners of Lord Stanley's Cup, have pretty big MMA fans in their midst. Goaltender and Conn Smythe winner Tim Thomas told Fight magazine that even on game nights, he'll stay up late to watch the fights so that he won't be left out when his teammates discuss them in the locker room.

He became a fan of MMA in its early days, recognizing the genius in Royce Gracie's jiu-jitsu.

"As a kid, I got into a fight with a wrestler. He was bigger than me, but he couldn't fight. He took me down, and I could not get up," Thomas says. "I gained an appreciation right there for wrestling, and to later see Gracie's BJJ?I got hooked on the ground game right away."

As a goalie, Thomas doesn't get in as many fights as his teammates, but he did admit that the many fights he's watched were in his mind when he got into a fight with Montreal goaltender Carey Price.

There are plenty of other hockey connections to MMA. UFC lightweight Sam Stout told Cagewriter that he is good friends with the Chicago Blackhawks' Dave Bolland. Featherweight contender and Bostonian Kenny Florian celebrated the Bruins win on his Twitter account, and UFC president Dana White encouraged, in his own, vulgar way, the Canucks fans to stop rioting.

In fact, hockey and MMA are a natural match. Both have dedicated fan bases, commonplace bloodshed, and athletes with busted-up faces. How could they not be friends?

Barnett steamrolls Rogers at Strikeforce, wins via submission

Brett Rogers was no match for the experience and grappling of Josh Barnett. Barnett is one of the most controversial characters in the sport, but no one will deny the fact that he's vicious on the ground. Barnett scored a big takedown at the start of the second round and quickly slapped on an arm-triangle choke. He finished Rogers at 1:17 of the round to advance to the semifinals of the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix.

"We can talk, but I still got a tournament to fight bit by bit, inch by inch and one by one. I'm gonna take 'em down one by one," said Barnett, showing off his pro wrestling verbal chops. "I'm going to add one skull to the collection, until the next, until the next. Until I'm standing on top of a pile of bodies with a pile of gold in my hand!"

Barnett's had a terrible history with athletic commissions in the U.S. He's still not licensed in the state of California, where he tested positive for PED's back in July of 2009. He also tested positive in Nevada back in 2002. Barnett, 24 at the time, had just won the UFC heavyweight title from Randy Couture.

Tonight, Rogers (11-3) spent 5:17 of 6:17 on the floor. Barnett mounted him in both rounds. Much of the first round was spent softening up Rogers. The big man from Minnesota was gassed at the start of the second and ate a huge left hook. Barnett grabbed hold of the stunned Rogers and dumped him hard via lateral drop. It took just a few seconds for Barnett to lock on the choke and Rogers lasted only five more ticks before he tapped.

Barnett (31-5) landed both of his takedown attempts and was good on 44-of-56 strikes. He'll face Russian Sergei Kharitonov in the semifinals. Kharitonov destroyed Andrei Arlovski in the opening round back in February.

Overeem beats Werdum at Strikeforce, but fails to impress

Alistair Overeem looked to send a strong message in Saturday night's Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix quarterfinals. Instead, he created plenty of questions about his much larger physique and his stamina. Overeem took a sloppy fight via unanimous decision, 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28, in the main event at Strikeforce's Dallas event.

Overeem, a huge tourney favorite, suddenly looks beatable. All three of the remaining fighters in the field are capable of taking out Overeem (35-11, one no-contest).

In the semifinals, the 256-pounder will face the massive Antonio "Big Foot" Silva. On the other side of the bracket, is a big puncher in Sergei Kharitonov and a great ground fighter, Josh Barnett.

Overeem has added 40 pounds to his frame over the last five years, but now it appears he may have gone too far. His gas tank was a real issue and his hand speed was unimpressive.

"As you know, Fabricio is one of the best grapplers in the world, so we didn't want to play with him on the ground," said Overeem, who indicated nothing Werdum landed really hurt him. "He just felt a little bit unpredictable in the standup."

For 15 minutes, Werdum (14-5-1) tried to get the fight to the ground where he could show off his excellent submission skills, but he never got Overeem into a dangerous spot.

The Brazilian worked hard throughout the opening round but was consistently thrown away by the powerful Overeem. In the second and third, both fighters were extremely tired. By pulling guard, Werdum actually got into some decent positions on his back with Overeem in his guard, but he was too tired to execute a submission. Overeem was also exhausted and often times just laid close to Werdum's body.

On the feet, Overeem landed harder, single shots. Werdum landed some decent combinations. CompuStrike actually had Werdum outlanding Overeem 69-48, but few of his shots did real damage.

Usher Wants Pippa Middleton to Wear His Underwear

Usher Wants Pippa Middleton to Wear His Underwear

Her sister may have landed a prince, but Pippa Middleton's life isn't too shabby these days, either. As the pop/R&B star Usher puts it: "Everybody knows her now" -- which is why he wants her to model for his new lingerie line!

The "Lil Freak" singer gushed about pretty Pippa to Britain's Look magazine, "I don't think there's a more beautiful, more stunning, more talked-about woman in the world at the moment. I'm going to be approaching her in the next few weeks and setting up a meeting this summer."

While good looks and a hot bod definitely help sell skivvies, Usher claims collaborating with Pippa would be a sage business decision because "she would be a global brand." He says, "I am sure everybody is trying to sign her up and she won't be cheap, but she has the looks and the popularity to really establish a new product."

So, will Pippa actually agree to do this? That seems very unlikely. She doesn't need the money, and she's already got the attention of the whole world! Why strip down at this point? Dream on, Usher!
